"Your eye, the wanderer, sees more," said Charles Olson. Winner of Prize Americana, Strangers is the gnostic fool's journey through the cosmos recreated in each look into the strange and forgotten in little America. And how find it? This poetry collection: as much mosaic as Merle, the music of winnowing—a journey through the strangeness of being that yearns for belonging.

REVIEWS

NORMAN FINKELSTEIN: There is a freshness to Evan Thomas's Strangers that gratifies and delights. It is an American freshness, an exuberant renewal of the American Grain, midwestern, southern, rural, suburban, but still perfectly comfortable visiting New York's Upper East Side. To the cardinal's song, Whitman's child again goes forth in these poems. Ronald Johnson's delight in the play of language is to be found here, as well as Louis Zukofsky's precision, for throughout this deeply satisfying first book, Thomas seeks "To make a mysterious object by mysterious utterance." Yet however mysterious, these objects are also absolutely forthright. Spend some time with the poetry of Evan Thomas, strangers, and you will find a friend.

MARK SCROGGINS: The landscapes of Evan Thomas's Strangers are deeply American, redolent slices of the South and Midwest, of psychedelic suburbia, of clay banks and steaming rivers, the occupations and cultural signifiers of a paradoxical stratification of the spiritual and the commodified, the aesthetic and the profane. And they are Americana made strange, torqued from its essential old weirdness into a New Weird that worries at the basement of the reader's consciousness, that makes the small nape-hairs rise. The engine of this astonishing juju is Thomas's language itself, a supple and subtle lyricism that revels in the precise, the awkward, and the unexpected—and the unexpectedly beautiful. Prepare, Reader, for a strange and wonderful ride indeed: one from which you will emerge both astonished and changed.
