Invisible

FADE IN:

INT. BEDROOM -- DAY

Claudia (50s) wakes up and slowly gets out of bed.

CLAUDIA (V.O.): I'm not exactly sure when I became invisible.

She walks toward the bathroom.

INT. BATHROOM -- CONTINUOUS

Claudia looks into the mirror and sees no reflection. Shock and confusion register on her face.

CLAUDIA (V.O.): But I remember the exact moment I realized I was. There were signs, of course.

BEGIN FLASHBACK

INT. CAFE -- DAY

Claudia waits in line for coffee. A YOUNG MAN cuts in front of her. TWO YOUNG WOMEN, deep in conversation, step in front her.

EXT. CAFE -- DAY

Claudia takes a sip of her coffee, someone bumps her, splashing it down her shirt.

CLAUDIA: Hey!

Another person walks by from the other direction and does it again.

INT. OFFICE -- DAY

Claudia sits across from her frustrated boss, CHASE (30s). They are talking to JASON who is on a speaker phone.

CHASE: Operating costs are too high. What am I supposed to do now, Jason?

CLAUDIA: I could perform an audit and create a budget.

Chase ignores her and drums his fingers on the desk.

CHASE: What to do. What...to...do...

JASON (O.S.): I just started using this app that connects to your bank, tracks everything you spend, and puts it into categories, so you can see where your money's going. Then we'll know where to cut back.

CHASE: Dude, that's brilliant.

JASON: Thank you.

Close on Claudia's reaction: Didn't she just say exactly that?

EXT. STREET -- DAY

Claudia walks down the street toward a YOUNG NEIGHBOR, walking her dog. She smiles and waves. Claudia brightens and waves back. The neighbor passes Claudia without acknowledging her. She turns and realizes the neighbor had waved to a PERSON behind Claudia.

EXT. PARK -- DAY

Claudia eats her lunch on a bench. A MAN sits down on Claudia's lap and scrolls through his phone, not noticing her.

She tries to get him to move, but he doesn't react to her.

She gives up and just sits there.

END FLASHBACK

EXT. COLLEGE CAMPUS -- BENCH -- DAY

Claudia sits next to the statue of a long-ago college president.

CLAUDIA (to the statue): That one was interesting. It's strange, getting old. You're still you, but people stop seeing you, looking at you. You did something great to get a life-sized statue of yourself planted here. But people forget, don't they? They forget what you did, who you were.

INT. LIVING ROOM -- DAY

Claudia eats ice cream from the tub.

CLAUDIA (V.O.): I was devastated.

She raises the spoon to her mouth and stops.

CLAUDIA (V.O.): But then it dawned on me. I'm invisible. I'm invisible.

INT. HOUSE -- DAY

Claudia, wearing a red cape, puts on a red mask.

CLAUDIA (V.O.): I decided to do something with my new power.

MONTAGE

- Claudia, in her cape and mask, leaves flowers at a neighbor's door.
- Unloads groceries for a busy mom. The mom comes out of the house to see the groceries on her front porch.
- Stops a stroller from rolling down a hill.
- Surprise cleans someone's house.
- Slaps a beer out of an underage teen's hand. Twice. He gives up.
- Continuously blows the match out when someone tries to light a cigarette.
- Slams the door every time a robber tries to break into a car. He gives up and walks away.

END MONTAGE

EXT. CROWDED SPORTING EVENT -- DAY

Claudia watches the crowd.

CLAUDIA (V.O.): I started to wonder if there were other invisible people. And if there were, could I see them? Could they see me?

EXT. PARK -- DAY

A ball rolls into Claudia's feet. It belongs to SKY (5). She kicks the ball back to him.

SKY: Thanks, Nana.

CLAUDIA: You can see me?

SKY: Of course. Can you see me?

CLAUDIA: I can.

SKY: I like your superhero outfit.

CLAUDIA: Thanks.

SKY: Wanna play?

CLAUDIA: Yes!

Claudia and the boy kick the ball back and forth.

DISSOLVE to them playing chase.

CLAUDIA (V.O.): That's when I discovered I'm not invisible to everyone.

EXT. PARK -- DAY

Sky, in his own mask and cape, hands a flower to a sad looking GIRL (5) as Claudia watches, proud.

CLAUDIA (V.O.): Some people do see me.

EXT. APARTMENT DOOR -- DAY

Claudia watches Sky in his cape and mask, knock on the door, and return a lost dog to the owner.

CLAUDIA (V.O.): The important ones, anyway.

EXT. HILL -- DAY

Claudia and Sky stand side by side, hands on their hips in a superhero poses, capes flapping in the wind.

FADE OUT.
