RICH MURPHY

Window Dressing

The science projects conjure,
suggest, best guess in a terrarium.
School children press
noses to screens that sift
for fishbowl media hype.

Outside, culture bubbles slip by
on the short-term film:
Presidents, dictators, tribal chiefs
come and go in petri dish populations.

Egos foam in the glass houses,
the heads on beer publicity
that with time pop and flatten.

The ascetic with crossed legs
tethers to a lens and to big city lights,
neon for morons splashing
cash from water glasses.

A historian will shake
when holding the snow globe
at publication, as though
a bell jar presented evidence
beyond the atmospheric bead
that surrounds a planetary survival.
